The son of a soldier, Henri Augustin Gambard was born on October 30, 1819 in Sceaux, south of Paris.
He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on October 9, 1839 as a student of Signol. In 1843, he competed for the Prix de Rome for Œdipe s'exilant de Thèbes. He won the second Second Grand Prix after Eugène-Jean Damery and François-Léon Bénouville. He then exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1845 until 1859, without however abandoning the provincial Salons such as Rouen, Le Havre or Dijon.
In 1850, the artist married Elisabeth Dutilleux, whose union produced a son named Ary (1852-1897) who was himself a painter like his father.
Henri Gambard died on October 22, 1882 in Paris.
